A nudge for internet addictions

Former Nudge research assistant Heidi Liu recommends that Firefox users with an internet addiction install PageAddict.

PageAddict is a Firefox extension that will help you monitor your Internet addiction. Once you install it, choose PageAddict from the Tools menu to display a summary of the time you’ve wasted on each web site for this day, and a graph of your web usage.

You can also categorize different web sites and restrict how much time you spend in each category in a day.

To go along with this idea, I propose something similar for TV – CableAddict. It could work one of two ways: you could either prepay for your cable/satellite service (akin to prepaying for a cell phone) or at the end of every month your cable/satellite provider could send you an itemized list of all the different TV channels you watched and the total amount of time your TV was on. The same could be done at the end of the year (just think of your reaction when you found out that you spend two total months of the year sitting in front of the TV).
